Misdiagnosing Narcissism - Asperger's Disorder.

Social and occupational interactions are severely hampered and conversational talents are primitive. The Asperger's patient body language - eye to eye gawk, body posture, facial expressions - is constricted and synthetic, similar to the narcissist's. Yet, the gulf between Asperger's and pathological narcissism is huge. His social dysfunctioning is the result of conscious haughtiness and the reluctance to invest scant psychological energy in cultivating relationships with inferior and undeserving others. Many narcissists reach the highest rungs of their community, church, firm, or voluntary organization. Almost all of the time, they function perfectly - though the inescapable blowups and the grating extortion of Vain Supply generally put a cap on the narcissist's career and social liaisons. His initiative - as an example, to share his experiences with nearest and dearest or to engage in foreplay - is frustrated. To bypass the discomfort of refusal, they confine themselves to solitary activities - but, in contrast to the schizoid, not by choice. An Aspie as someone with Aspergers is typically referred, will have a tendency to have a particularly literal interpretation of language.

A major reason for an Aspies problems with social working is the absence of experience of refined social cues and patterns of speech,eg sarcasm. The imaging which has been done means that in people with Aspergers this area of the brain grows and develops much slower whilst other areas grow more quickly. Here is a fab post on asperger syndrome behavior.

What you frequently get is a talented student that does not understand how to deal with folk. We do things that people we think we know do. Tiny chemical signals that control what the brain does. Folk with Autistic spectrums don't produce these neurons when they see somebody else doing things. The words are the same but the voice changes. He's unlikely to obey conversational rules and etiquette ( as an example, to let others talk in turn ).
